September 2022 saw Monagea NS establish the first Deaf/ Hard of Hearing class in rural County Limerick. Four children are now attending our class on a daily basis. Our special class caters for pupils from Junior Infants to 6th class. The language and curricular content of the core subjects are taught in this base class . Deaf specific teaching and learning strategies, educational programmes are employed by the Teacher of the Deaf. The base classroom is fitted with assistive technology which is used by pupils and teachers to provide for pupils' individual listening needs. Assistive technology is also fitted in the mainstream classes to accommodate these pupils. Students enrolled in this class integrate with their hearing peers, when and where appropriate during the school day; in order to prepare them for a hearing world whilst also incorporating Deaf culture in the school. Irish Sign Language is also being taught to all our mainstream classes by our visiting Irish Sign Language tutor.
